Carbon Tracker
Track your flight carbon emissions using ICAO and DEFRA methodology. See per-trip impact and cumulative totals over time.
Overview
The Carbon Tracker calculates CO2 emissions for every flight you take, using the same methodology that governments and airlines use. You get per-trip numbers, cumulative totals, and a clear picture of your travel footprint over time.
How the Math Works
MileIntel uses ICAO and DEFRA calculation standards. The formula accounts for:
- Great-circle distance — Haversine calculation between origin and destination, plus a detour factor for non-direct routing.
- Cabin class multiplier — Economy uses a 1x factor. Premium economy is ~1.5x. Business is ~2.5x. First class is ~3x. This reflects the physical space each seat occupies.
- Aircraft type adjustments — Newer aircraft (787, A350) produce less CO2 per kilometer than older models.
- Load factor — Average passenger load for the route and airline.
What You See
Each trip shows its carbon output in kilograms of CO2. Your dashboard displays a running total for the current year, a comparison to previous years, and where you fall relative to average traveler benchmarks.
Key Details
- Navigator sees per-trip calculations. Executive and Black get cumulative tracking with goals and year-over-year trends.
- Emissions calculate automatically when flights are added to trips.
- Numbers update if you change cabin class or routing.
Tips
- Use the tracker to compare routing options — a nonstop in economy often beats a connection in business on emissions.
- Check your yearly total before purchasing carbon offsets so you buy the right amount.
