The short answer

On United's Newark–Nuuk route, the front cabin is not a lie-flat business-class seat. United flies the route with a Boeing 737 MAX 8 fitted with its standard domestic-style first-class recliners up front. It brands that cabin "Premium Plus," the name it uses for long-haul premium economy on its larger widebody jets, according to The Points Guy.

The Points Guy describes the trip as a roughly four-hour flight from the New York City area. On a flight that short, the upgrade buys more space and service, not sleep. Price it on those terms.

What the route is

When United launched Newark–Nuuk in June 2025, it was the first nonstop service between the US and Greenland in nearly 20 years, The Points Guy reported. No airline had flown between the two since Air Greenland's short-lived 2007 nonstop to Baltimore/Washington (BWI). Before the launch, travelers had to connect through Iceland or Europe. The inaugural flight landed after 3 hours and 46 minutes of flying time.

Upgraded Points reported that flights began on June 14, 2025, as twice-weekly seasonal service. The final 2025 departure from Newark was on September 23, and the last return from Nuuk was on September 24. United announced on August 25 that it would bring the route back the following year, and One Mile at a Time reported that the route returned in 2026.

Booking with points and miles

The table below lists the booking options that The Points Guy and Upgraded Points describe. The Points Guy said the route had been in high demand from the outset. Our inference is that finding award seats may be harder than affording them, so it is worth checking partner programs as well as United's own.

What it cost in 2025 (historical only)

These figures describe the 2025 season. They are not current prices or availability:

  • For the 2025 season, Upgraded Points said to expect nearly $1,200 for a round-trip ticket, or 80,000 MileagePlus miles, in economy.

We did not search fares or award space ourselves. The credible sources here give no premium-cabin cash or award prices for this route.

A decision rule (our inference)

This section is our reasoning, not a sourced finding. Start by pricing both cabins for your exact dates. Then ask whether a wider recliner and premium service on a roughly four-hour flight are worth the difference to you.

Hypothetical example: suppose the front cabin costs far more miles than economy. Those extra miles might do more for you on a longer trip where a flat bed matters.

If you plan to transfer bank points, work out your break-even. The cash fare and the points required set the maximum value per bank point at which the award ties paying cash. If you value your points above that figure, paying cash is the better deal.

Watching for deals

New routes can be worth tracking because airlines sometimes offer attractive deals to market route announcements, NerdWallet notes. NerdWallet suggests two steps:

  • Sign up for airline emails, because typically only a select number of seats go on sale.
  • Use price-history tools such as Google Flights and Going to judge what counts as a good fare.

When the route was new, NerdWallet also noted that how full United's new flights got would shape end-of-season pricing and decide whether the routes returned.

Limits
