Bottom line: Buy IHG One Rewards points in a sale only when you have a specific stay in mind and paying with purchased points beats the cash rate for the same nights. The most recent sale's offer period ran through 11:59 PM ET on October 13, 2026. IHG's sale history suggests similar offers recur. That is our inference, not a guarantee.

What the October 2026 sale offered (offer period October 10–13)

According to offer terms reproduced by Frequent Miler, the sale ran from 12:00 AM ET on October 10 to 11:59 PM ET on October 13, 2026. Buying at least 35,000 points in a single transaction earned a 100% bonus plus a 3,500-point gift. The gift is deposited within six weeks.

The terms limited purchases to 200,000 points per calendar year, reduced by anything you had already bought that year. At that maximum, both One Mile at a Time and Upgraded Points described ending up with 400,000 points for $2,000.

Why the deadline matters less than your plan

Frequent Miler's sale history lists repeated 100% bonuses at 0.5 cents per point, including September 15 – October 5, 2026 and August 1 – September 1, 2026. One Mile at a Time says IHG sells points quite often, typically with bonuses of 80–100%.Our inference: missing one sale is rarely costly. Buying points before you know where you will use them is the bigger risk. Upgraded Points makes a similar point: buying generally makes sense only with a specific redemption planned.

The decision rule

IHG uses dynamic award pricing (prices in points move with demand). Award costs generally correlate somewhat with cash rates, but not uniformly (One Mile at a Time). So the comparison has to be done stay by stay.

Frequent Miler gives one example from the Staybridge Suites Temecula-Wine Country:

  • The average nightly cash cost was $258.81 with taxes and fees.
  • Award nights cost 19,000 to 23,000 points.
  • Frequent Miler says points bought at 0.5 cents would have meant roughly $95-$115 per night.

That is one historical example, not a typical result.

Two factors pull in opposite directions (Frequent Miler):

  • Award nights don't earn points unless a promotion covers them.
  • Most hotel taxes aren't charged on award stays.

Frequent Miler argues the two roughly cancel out.

Fourth night free: useful, with a catch

According to Frequent Miler, the fourth-night-free benefit on award stays goes to holders of the IHG One Rewards Premier Select, Premier and Business cards. Holders of the IHG One Rewards card get it after spending $5,000 in a calendar year.

The catch: IHG deducts the points price of each fourth night rather than discounting the whole stay. That works best when the fourth night is the most expensive and worst when it is the cheapest.

Tradeoffs and limits

  • Your bonus may differ. The bonus percentage shows when eligible members log in. Upgraded Points notes that IHG runs targeted offers (bonuses shown only to selected members), so your offer may not match what others see.
  • The card discount doesn't stack. The co-branded card discount on purchased points applies only at the normal price, not on top of a sale bonus (One Mile at a Time, Upgraded Points).
  • How the charge codes. Purchases are processed by Points.com and don't count as hotel spending, so a card that rewards everyday spend is the usual choice.
  • No status credit. Purchased and bonus points don't count toward elite status.
  • Posting delays. Purchased points can take up to 72 hours to post. The extra gift in this sale could take up to six weeks.
  • Expiry. For non-elite members, points expire after 12 months of inactivity (One Mile at a Time). That matters if you are tempted to stockpile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the IHG 100% bonus points sale still available?

That offer's terms covered only purchases made between 12:00 AM ET on October 10 and 11:59 PM ET on October 13, 2026. IHG has run similar sales frequently, but our sources do not confirm any future sale or its terms.

Does the IHG credit card discount on buying points stack with a sale bonus?

No. The cardholder discount applies only when buying points at the normal price, not on top of a sale bonus.

Do purchased IHG points count toward elite status?

No. Purchased points and bonus points from the offer do not count toward IHG One Rewards elite status.

Which card should I use to buy IHG points?

Purchases are processed by Points.com and don't count as hotel spending. Sources suggest a card that earns well on everyday spend, or one where you are working toward a minimum spend requirement.
