Delta Air Lines will fly its last nonstops between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Orange County's John Wayne Airport (SNA) on November 29, 2026, Simple Flying reported on Oct. 18, 2026. The report cites schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. American Airlines will keep flying the route daily.

For travelers who want a lie-flat nonstop between JFK and Orange County this winter, American is the remaining option on that airport pair.

What Delta announced

A Delta spokesperson told Simple Flying that the change is part of routine network planning. Delta is moving the route's seasonal end date to November 29, 2026. The airline apologized to affected customers and said it will resume seasonal JFK–SNA service in May 2027.

The schedule data cited in the report show the flights returning on May 6, 2027. They are scheduled to run daily, under the same flight numbers and at the same times.

The pause comes soon after a comeback. Delta brought the route back in May, its first JFK–SNA nonstop in seven years. It originally planned six flights a week but has flown the route daily since the relaunch. The current schedule has two flights:

  • DL403 leaves JFK at 8:00 AM and arrives in Orange County around 11:00 AM.
  • DL556 is a red-eye, an overnight flight. It leaves SNA at 9:15 PM and lands at JFK around 5:00 AM the next morning.

Why premium travelers notice this route

Simple Flying describes SNA as a workable alternative for travelers who want to avoid Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). All three US legacy carriers fly between Orange County and the New York area, but only Delta and American offer business class.

  • Delta flies JFK–SNA with its premium Boeing 757-200s with lie-flat seats, a layout Simple Flying identifies as 75S. It holds 168 passengers across three classes, including 16 lie-flat Delta One seats arranged two-by-two.
  • American flies its A321T. It has 102 seats, 30 of which are lie-flat. American launched JFK–SNA on July 2, 2021.
  • United flies Boeing 737-700, 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 aircraft between SNA and Newark (EWR). Its front cabin is domestic first class with recliner seats, not lie-flat beds.

A caveat on American's cabin

American's offering is also changing. As its new Airbus A321XLR jets arrive, American has been gradually removing the lie-flat seats from its A321Ts and refitting them with its standard A321 interior. Simple Flying, citing Cirium, says the A321T is scheduled to stay on JFK–SNA through September. The report also says American plans to stop selling Flagship First seats in March.

Our inference: aircraft and cabin layouts on this route are in flux. Check the seat map for your specific flight rather than assuming lie-flat seating.

If you'd rather stay with Delta via LAX

Our inference: some Delta loyalists may switch to Delta's JFK–LAX flights during the pause. That route has its own reported tradeoffs.

In an internal memo to pilots, reported by View from the Wing and One Mile at a Time, Delta said JFK–LAX runs at a higher risk of delays than much of its domestic network. The memo also said customer satisfaction was below its domestic average at the time. Delta measures this with net promoter score (NPS), a customer-satisfaction gauge. The memo put JFK–LAX at 9.2 points below the mainline domestic NPS and LAX–JFK at 12.7 points below. Those figures describe the period of the memo, not necessarily today.

Bottom line

Our read: if your trip falls between Delta's November 29, 2026 last flight and its May 6, 2027 return, you have three nonstop choices:
  • American is the daily JFK–SNA nonstop with lie-flat seats, though you should confirm the aircraft.
  • United flies to Newark with recliner first class.
  • Delta loyalists can wait for May 2027 or weigh a connection or the LAX alternative.
