Citi or Capital One? Choosing Between Two 30% JAL Transfer Bonuses
Both banks advertise the same percentage, but they give different ratios and end on different dates. Neither is worth using without a specific award in hand.
Two offers, same percentage, different results
Citi has added Japan Airlines Mileage Bank, JAL's frequent flyer program, as a ThankYou Rewards transfer partner. It is running a 30% transfer bonus through Oct. 24, 2026 (Doctor of Credit, Upgraded Points). Capital One has its own 30% bonus to JAL that ends Sept. 30, 2026 (The Points Guy, Thrifty Traveler).
The percentage is the same because each bank applies it to a different base rate. Citi's rate depends on your card. Annual-fee ThankYou cards normally transfer at 1,000 points to 1,000 JAL miles. No-annual-fee cards normally get 700 miles per 1,000 points. Capital One's ordinary rate to JAL is 1,000 miles to 750 (Thrifty Traveler). The table below shows the bonus-period ratios side by side.
Our inference, not a sourced finding: Based on the published ratios, a Citi annual-fee card gives the most JAL miles per point transferred. Capital One is in the middle, and a no-annual-fee Citi card gives the fewest. If Capital One is your only route to JAL, its earlier deadline is the one to watch. What JAL miles can buy
One-way JAL awards between the U.S. and Japan start at 27,000 miles in economy, 40,000 in premium economy and 55,000 in business class (Thrifty Traveler, The Points Guy). You can also use JAL miles on Oneworld partners such as American Airlines and British Airways (The Points Guy).
JAL prices partner awards by distance and adds the segment distances together. That means a round trip can cost far fewer miles than twice the one-way price (Thrifty Traveler).
Awards also come with taxes and fees. On one Dallas–Tokyo Haneda business-class example, Thrifty Traveler reported $353 one way.
The catches
- Saver seats are scarce. Business awards at the lowest price have become hard to find. Your best chance is at the far end of JAL's schedule, roughly 12 months out (Thrifty Traveler). The Points Guy notes that competition for some awards has grown as more banks transfer to JAL (source). Thrifty Traveler says one-way awards at 75,000 or 80,000 miles are easier to find.
- New accounts wait. JAL generally requires an account to be 60 days old before you can redeem miles. Thrifty Traveler reports that Capital One arranged an exception that lets its cardholders redeem within seven days of transferring.
- Miles expire. JAL miles expire after 36 months, and there is no way to extend them (The Points Guy).
- Family only. You can book JAL awards only for direct family members, per Thrifty Traveler.
- No undo. Transfers are irreversible, and some bonuses are targeted to certain members, so confirm the offer appears in your own account (The Points Guy).
The tradeoff
A bonus lowers the number of bank points an award costs. It doesn't create award space, and it turns flexible points into miles with a fixed expiration. If you have a bookable seat, a family traveler and a JAL account old enough to redeem, the bonus is a genuine discount. Without those three things, you could end up with a balance you can't use. The steps below put that into order.
