Air France-KLM Flights: Amex Offer Cash or Flying Blue Miles?

If you are already paying cash for an Air France or KLM trip that starts in the US and costs $1,000 or more, check your Amex Offers tab first. If you hold transferable points instead, the headline award price matters less than two practical questions: is a saver-level seat available on your dates, and how much will you owe in taxes and fees on top of the miles?

The Amex Offer: real, but conditional

Doctor of Credit reported in a Sept. 4, 2026 update that an Amex Offer for Air France and KLM was back and valid through Sept. 30, 2026.

The terms it describes:

• Spend $1,000 or more at airfrance.us or klm.us and get $200 back.
• The flight must originate in the US and be charged in US dollars.

A version that pays 20,000 Membership Rewards points instead has also appeared. A June 1, 2026 update described that version.

Two limits matter:

• Check your own Amex Offers. Don't assume your account shows either version.
• Terms change. An April 20, 2026 version required $2,000 in spending for $400 back and ran until May 31, 2026.

The award side: saver seats decide everything

Flying Blue is the joint loyalty program of Air France, KLM and Transavia. The Points Guy's Flying Blue guide lists American Express Membership Rewards among the programs that transfer points to Flying Blue.

The same guide says business-class flights to Europe start at 60,000 miles. However, those rates apply only to the lowest saver-level seats, which are limited. The guide also says availability can be unpredictable because of dynamic pricing, meaning award prices move rather than following a fixed chart.

A September 2025 TPG review of a KLM business-class flight shows how this can play out:

• The writer booked a last-minute business-class award from Ljubljana to New York via Amsterdam for 84,000 miles plus $346.81 in taxes and fees. The cash price was more than $4,250.
• In a separate search, a Paris–New York business award priced at around 92,000 miles. Starting in Bordeaux brought it to 60,000.

Those are 2025 snapshots, not current prices. They still illustrate two points. Taxes and fees are a real cash cost on these awards. And according to the same review, adding a connecting city or being flexible on dates can sometimes lower the mileage price.

How to decide (our framework)

This section is editorial reasoning, not measured data.

Start with the cash fare you would actually book. If you pay through airfrance.us or klm.us and the offer is in your account, it lowers your effective cost. If you have the points version, the reduction is whatever you personally value those points at. A cash ticket also earns Flying Blue miles based on the fare before taxes and fees. Per TPG, members without elite status earn 4 miles per euro.Then price the award, including taxes and fees. The award saves you the cash fare, minus the offer's value, minus the award's taxes and fees. Divide that saving by the bank points you would transfer to get a break-even figure. That figure is the maximum value per bank point at which the award only ties paying cash:

• If you value your points above that figure, paying cash is the better use.
• If you value them below it, the award comes out ahead.

Because the Amex Offer lowers the cash side, it also pushes that break-even figure down.

Hold off on transfers. TPG notes that Flying Blue miles expire after two years of inactivity unless you have elite status. Our view: transfer points only once you have found an award seat you intend to book.
